How this works (the honest bit).
This is our assumption rather than a measurement. Running is a minority activity, and participation varies enormously by country, age and culture; we assume that about one person in a hundred runs on a given day, for around thirty minutes. That puts roughly 1.7 million people running at any moment - a small number next to walking, which is the point. A country with a strong distance-running culture will be under-represented by a single global rate, and we have not tried to correct for that. Every figure on this page is a model built from population data, each country's local clock and the assumptions above. It is an estimate, it moves every second, and at least one of them is certainly true.
